Sochi’s beaches are mostly rocky with some offering a mix of pebble and imported sand. The subtropical climate makes it a popular summer retreat with a number of nightclubs dotted along the coastline for those in search of night-time entertainment.
Away from the beachfront various parks offer the perfect spot for an afternoon stroll, while those in search of active pursuits will find numerous hiking opportunities just outside of town including the chance to hike along the Agura ravine to enjoy Sochi’s highest waterfall.
Culture wise you can enjoy a visit to the Town History Museum; highlights include the space display featuring Soyuz 9, a capsule which returned to Earth after just 18 days in obit in June 1970. The Sochi Art Museum, built in 1936, is another top-attraction featuring a substantial collection by Russian greats and lesser known local artists.
Sochi’s arboretum is a must for nature lovers with over 1,500 species of trees and shrubs, there’s also a cable car offering spectacular views of the park. If you are travelling with children a visit to Sochi Discovery World Aquarium is a must. The aquarium plays host to sharks, penguins and an array of tropical fish.
As evening approaches many visitors and locals congregate around The Singing Fountains, one of the resorts most frequented attractions, featuring a water-display accompanied by lighting and music.

For a change of scene take the 25-minute drive from Sochi, via the A148 and E97/A-A147, to the relaxed resort of Dagomys. This small village, once the holiday residence of Tsar Nicholas II, is now one of the Black Sea’s most popular resorts. Aside from a pebbly beach and striking Caucasus Mountain backdrop there are numerous opportunities for walking and bird spotting at the Dendrarium Botanical Gardens. Visitors can also tour the local tea plantations or check out the sulphur springs of Matsesta, thought by some to have healing properties.
Orekhovsky Waterfall – Sochi National Park
Drive for just over 30 minutes from Sochi, via Plastunskya Street and Japaridze Street, to reach the Orekhovsky Waterfall, a beautiful natural attraction set in the equally stunning Sochi National Park. Although only the second highest falls in Sochi, it’s thought by many to be the most attractive and it’s certainly the most accessible. The surrounding forests and lush greenery provide ample inspiration for both family photos and nature photographers.
Enjoy a scenic drive from Sochi, via the A148 and E97, to reach Vorontsovskaya Cave, it will take around an hour. This impressive cave system, located on the Vorontsov Ridge, is well worth exploring with 500 metres of enchantingly illuminated passages and caverns showcasing stalactites, stalagmites and unusual rock formations.
