Granada is colourful and cosmopolitan yet distinctly Spanish, with streets full of tapas bars, performance artists and the occasional fiery flamenco display.
Topping the list of attractions is Alhambra; part palace and part fort it’s a stunning building which has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Inside there are numerous treasures to marvel at including fountained courtyards, mosaic lined chambers and atmospheric arched walkways.
Granada Cathedral is another big draw; the brainchild of 17th-century artist and architect Alonso Cano, it has an impressive baroque exterior and cavernous Renaissance style interior.
When the sun is shining locals and visitors flock to the Generalife park, a pretty series of gardens with waterfalls, flower beds and arched walkways –the perfect spot for a moment of quiet contemplation.
Those in search of culture won’t have to look far with a number of museums vying for attention. The Science Museum provides a fun day out for families while the Archeological Museum boasts seven galleries including a collection of Roman and Arabic artefacts.
Granada’s Gypsy quarter in Sacromonte offers a change of scene with brightly decorated houses and numerous cave dwellings still inhabited by Gypsy families.
Those in search of retail therapy will find plenty of shops and boutiques to explore while those searching for something different may wish to check out La Alcaicería, the colourful Arab Spice Market.
